Rushmore Reviews: enabling Operators to 'Benchmark with the Best'
Over 20,000 offset wells drilled or completed by 150 Operators in 70 countries
Rushmore Reviews online
Hello,

It has been a busy start to the year for all of us at the Rushmore Reviews with a lot of time spent on increasing investment in our IT structure, recruitment and website enhancements. Peter and I are just back from Kuala Lumpur visiting with current and prospective participants and hope to have news of some exciting new contracts soon.

I am particularly pleased that our long term relationship with Repsol YPF continues to develop with their participation now increasing to near global status and plans to become fully global as data collection automation progresses.

A number of participants with US and Canadian land well operations asked at the last annual participants meeting for the scope of the studies to be expanded to cover these. A meeting in Houston has established a version of the DPR ‘land well lite’ workbook tailored for North American operations and it is anticipated that North America land well data will start to be included from 2007.

Planning for our annual participants meeting in November is now well underway. The Marcliffe Hotel is, as always, very busy at that time of year so early booking is highly recommended.

Finally, a reminder that the deadline for submission of Q1 2007 data is the 15th May.

Best wishes

Helen Rushmore

Putting your wells on the map

As our long-standing participants will know, most of the significant innovations now incorporated in the Reviews were first proposed at the annual meetings.

Last November was no exception as Seyi Adeleye of Shell Houston presented a paper suggesting that well locations be provided in the form of interactive maps.

The advent of Google Maps has now allowed us to do this.

Mandatory well location data in terms of longitude and latitude has been provided for most countries to date but not for the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and some other areas where well established block numbers are in use. This Novembers meeting will decide whether longitude and latitude data should be provided for all wells in future, allowing them to be displayed on the maps. Please add your view on this topic by visiting the website forum.

Participation update
Centrica UK and Challenger UK have both extended their DPR participation to 2009.

Devon have contracted to participate with their deepwater GOM wells in the DPR from 2000 to 2010 making Devon a global participant for the first time in this study.

EOG UK have confirmed their DPR participation to 2011, whilst Venture UK have renewed for both the DPR and CPR to 2009.

Husky Canada have extended their DPR and CPR participation to 2007.

Murphy have increased the scope of their DPR participation to global status and extended this to 2008 as well as committing to retrospective participation for their deepwater GOM wells back to 2004. Murphy have also contracted for the first time into the CPR with their 2006 Malaysia completions.

Repsol YPF have contracted for participation in the Drilling Performance Review from 2006 to 2010 initially on a near global basis, with the aim to become fully global as data collection automation becomes more widely available. Data will initially be provided from Algeria, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Iran, Libya, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad, Venezuela and deepwater GOM. It is expected that data will later also be provided from Argentina and Bolivia. The contract enables participation in the Completions Performance Review and it is anticipated that other countries will join Trinidad in providing completions data.

RDI now ready for testing
Following sustained demand from a range of participating Operators for a global index that can be used to normalise well difficulty, or group wells based on similar difficulty ranges, the Rushmore Drilling Index (RDI) has now been developed and is ready for testing.

The brief, provided from a series of meetings with the sponsoring Operators, was to establish this index from worldwide well data and to include only objective factors derived from the data in the DPR.

The provisional RDI model was presented at the November 2006 meeting and, while it not yet finished, the participants at that meeting decided that it should be made available in its current state for verification and testing by Operators.

An RDI calculator on the website main menu page enables you to obtain an RDI number for a new offshore well based on an input set of characteristics such as depth, angle, mud weight, casings etc. An RDI number will be provided for that well on a scale from 1 to 100 where a value of 50 is a well with average difficulty and the most difficult wells score 100.

The website also now shows the RDI value for most of the published offshore wells, excluding slot recovery and multi-lateral wells.

Once the RDI is fully verified it will be extended to land wells. The calculator also shows the P50 drilling time for that well based on the performance of the average operator.

Please do take a look at the RDI. We have made proposals on the website for verification and testing and would greatly welcome your feedback.

Data input training
Very positive feedback has been received from the Operator delegates following a recent training course aimed at staff responsible for the completion of the DPR or CPR data input workbooks.

"It was certainly worth attending, and all in all I thought it was a very good course and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has to provide data to the Reviews. Thanks again to all your helpful and friendly staff" Catriona Forman, Chevron UK.

There are still some places available on the next event week commencing 9th July and lots of places on the October course. This training, which takes place in Aberdeen, covers both data input requirements as well as basic website navigation and charting techniques.

Show me the learning curve
Anything we might do to make your life easier?

Chris Carstens of Chevron Houston posted a request on last year’s website forum asking for ‘year on year’ charts. This would enable quick and easy viewing of learning curves or to show annual performance, or other metric, changes. This facility, along with a number of other new charting options, is now provided on the website.

Dates for your diary
The Rushmore Reviews Annual Participant Meetings will take place 6th to 9th November 2007 at the Marcliffe at Pitfodels Hotel (www.marcliffe.com) in Aberdeen. Rooms are booked up very quickly, so if you wish to stay in the hotel please make your reservations as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Marcliffe HotelThe first two days provide an opportunity for Operators to share the ways in which they use the data for driving performance improvement, or any other applications. Talisman have further developed their completions data analysis software and they will be demonstrating this to us.

We greatly welcome other Operator presentations. We also use these days to look at the progress on topics such as the RDI, the Well Productivity Review, North America land well data, website features and other developments through workshops and group sessions.

The third day examines and agrees to any changes in the terms and conditions of participation as well as detailed DPR change proposals while the final day sees agreement to changes in the CPR and Well Productivity Review.

In the pipeline
Ray McKaig, our website and IT guru, is hard at work on the next version of the website which will markedly improve the data selection and analysis facilities. We plan to have this ready in time for the November meetings and to have it contain as many of the following features as possible by then.

One notable new feature will be the ability to select individual wells and then plot their time-depth curves together on an interactive chart. You will also be able to show the curves for specified hole sizes and other useful features.

Automate your data submission
We are pleased to report that IDS, Landmark and Peloton continue to actively develop and refine their data extraction routines for the DPR and CPR.

"Oil Search and IDS have developed an interface to map Completions and Workover data from input modules and automatically populate up to approximately 90% of the 144 column CPR workbook at the click of a mouse. We believe this level of instant automated compatibility between IDS' database product and the Completions Performance Review to be an industry first"
Stephen Cookson, Drilling Department Knowledge Manager, Oil Search, Australia.

Staff news

We are pleased to welcome two new members of staff. Gillian Thain is our administrator working in the sales and marketing group, and Steven Davidson is our latest CPR data analyst.

We found that Gillian has a particular talent for organising fund raising for charities. Recently, via a combination of baking by staff members as well as lunch in comedy costumes at our local restaurant, she helped earn nearly £300 for worthy causes in the UK and overseas.

Due to continuing demand we are now looking for a second part-time ‘data detective’ for work in both Aberdeen and overseas. We are also recruiting for data processing, IT and management positions.

Our original ‘data detective’, Rainer Jackisch, continues to be busy training PDO staff in data extraction in Oman as well as collecting data for clients in France and Egypt.

If you would like assistance in data input at your location or ‘on site’ staff training, please do let us know.

Finally we are delighted to announce the arrival of baby Drew to Andy Lawson, our Completions Data Supervisor and his wife, Angela. Congratulations!
