Rushmore Reviews: enabling Operators to 'Benchmark with the Best'
Over 30,000 offset wells drilled or completed by 160 Operators in 70 countries
  Rushmore Reviews News

Hello,

With just a few weeks to go before our annual meetings things are getting very busy here.

We had a couple of very positive and productive seminars in Oman a few weeks ago, one just for PDO staff and a second open session. I’d like to thank Tim Harrison of BG and Jo van de Velden of PDO for their interesting and useful presentations.

Delegates from Saudi Aramco, BP Oman, Petroleum Development Oman, Maersk Qatar,
Oman Ministry of Oil and Gas, BG Oman and ADCO Abu Dhabi.

Our ‘data detective’, Rainer Jackisch, continues to be busy helping participants with their data submissions. He has recently been helping Maersk with data extraction in Copenhagen and data automation in Qatar, as well as working in Aberdeen extracting data from daily reports and EOWR’s for other participants.

We reported in the last newsletter that Premier had enlarged their participation in the Reviews. I recently asked Tim the reasons behind their long standing participation in the studies...

"Premier Oil has gained real value from our participation in the Drilling Performance Review since 1997 for well cost estimating and a number of other applications. As a result we have now extended our global participation for another five years as well as committing to participate on a global basis in the Completions Performance Review retrospectively as well as forward to 2012".
Tim Hanson, Group Drilling Manager, Premier Oil.

I’m pleased to let you know that Chevron have just extended their CPR participation to include their Brazilian operations and BP have expanded their CPR participation to now include their deepwater GOM operations.

I'm really looking forward to meeting old and new friends in November.

Best wishes

Helen Rushmore

  Changes to the Reviews

The website forum is now closed to new proposals for changes to the Rushmore Reviews but you have until Thursday 30th October to post your views on the proposals that have been made.

These include;

  • providing an ‘end of well report’ for every well
  • reporting overhead costs separately in the DPR
  • reporting the drilling method per section
  • providing offshore rig move times and WOW data
  • providing casing setting depths and casing grades and weights
  • adding HP and HT to the tight well data reporting
  • reporting the tubing hanger deployment method in the CPR
  • removing pump change-outs from the workover definition
  • adding skin and flow efficiency data to the CPR
  • changing the ‘global’ rules with respect to Venezuela data
  • … and many more.

You can record your agreement or disagreement to these proposed changes on the website forum at www.RushmoreReviews.com and these will be taken into account at the meetings where a decision will be made to either accept or reject each of these proposals.

  New Website Features

You may have noticed some exciting new features on the website.

We have enhanced the search pages for both the DPR and CPR studies. You can now search for wells in multiple countries or regions and multiple operator groups or operators.

In the image to the right you can see both Albania and Angola have been selected. This is achieved by clicking on the first country and then clicking on subsequent countries when holding down the CTRL key on your keyboard. You can also select a range of countries by clicking on one and then click on one further down or further up in the list while holding down the SHIFT key.

These instructions also apply to Operator Groups, Regions and Operators.

We have also added the ability to display mud weights in any of the following units: sg, g/cm3, g/L, kg/m3, kg/L, kPa/m, lb/ft3, lb/bbl, ppg, psi/ft and psi/100ft.

We are looking at the option of displaying cost data in a range of currencies in future.

One feature that participants have been particularly requesting is the ability to choose to include or exclude specific wells from the dataset.

As you can see on the right, beside each well, in the first column, there is a checkbox which can be clicked to select a well.

When a well is selected a tick is visible in the box and the well's row is also highlighted, which is useful when scrolling horizontally.

As long as there is at least one well selected, the "Select Wells" column is highlighted. The selected well may not be on the page being viewed, but you are aware that at least one well is selected.

After you select one or more wells, you can click on the column header "Select Wells". This will show a small menu of options that you can use to then remove the wells you selected or remove all the wells you did not select.

If, for instance, you have an outlier well on a chart that is causing the scale to become compressed, you can take a note of its name, return to the search results, find the well and select to remove it. When you re-generate your chart, the well will no longer be visible.

We have also added the ability to plot Time vs. Depth data on a chart simply by selecting the wells you want to chart, clicking the "Draw charts" option and choosing "Time vs. Depth chart by well". You are able to plot the data for up to fifteen wells.
  Data correction

Although we put much effort into quality checking very occasionally there are errors in the published data.

Recently we discovered that some of the published 2007 "land well lite" DPR data was wrong. In particular Occidental Oman’s "land well lite" data was showing as metres when it should have been in feet. Also some other 2007 "land well lite" data showed incorrect "final bit size" and "drilling fluid type" entries.

These errors have now been corrected and we can confirm that “full” data from 2007 and "lite" data from other years were not affected by this problem. We apologise if you have used any of this data in your analyses.

  Annual meeting agendas

The agenda for the “Best Practices in Benchmarking of Drilling and Completions” meeting which will take place on Tuesday 11 November includes;

  • Welcome, introductions and objectives
  • Review of 2008 including new website features
  • The role of benchmark data in PDO performance improvement. Jo van de Velden, PDO
  • Developments in the APR. Jules Schoenmakers, Leader Oil & Gas US Abandonments Working Group
  • New drilling time estimation (REDD) and well normalisation (RDI) tools. Peter Rushmore
  • The use of Rushmore data in Probabilistic AFE Cost Estimating. Marty Rolleg, Devon
  • Drilling and Completion Performance Curves Methodology. Rob Papp, BG
  • The ‘market view’ from Rushmore. Seyi Adeleye, Shell
  • A powerful tool to optimise Rushmore data analysis. Bryce Gillespie, Cheval
  • Next steps in the development of the Reviews

The agenda for the annual meeting of the participants of the Drilling Performance Review on Wednesday 12 November is based around the proposals for change to the terms and conditions of participation and the DPR. These can be viewed here.

The agenda for the annual meeting of the participants of the Completions Performance Review on Thursday 13 November is based around the proposals for change to the CPR. These can be viewed towards the bottom of this document.

The agenda for the meeting to look at the Abandonment Performance Review will be held on Thursday 13 November after the CPR meeting. There are no proposals for change as this is the first year of this study but APR participants will be present to detail the benefits of sharing abandonment data, examine the data to be shared and answer any other questions that may be posed.
