Rushmore Reviews: enabling Operators to 'Benchmark with the Best'
Over 30,000 offset wells drilled or completed by 160 Operators in 70 countries
  Letter from Helen

Hello,

I would like to start by offering thanks, on behalf of all our participants, to those Operators who made presentations at our recent “Best Practices in the Benchmarking of Drilling, Completions and Well Abandonments” meeting. These were Seyi Adeleye of Shell, Houston, Joanne van de Velden of PDO, Oman, Marty Rolleg of Devon, Houston, Jules Schoenmakers of Oil & Gas UK / Shell Netherlands and Rod Black and Alex MacQueen of BG Reading and Aberdeen. Thanks also to Bryce Gillespie of Cheval Computing for demonstrating their charting analysis toolset.

Following the notification in the last newsletter that BP had extended their CPR participation to include their deepwater GOM operations I’m pleased to let you know that Chevron have now done likewise, initially providing data on 11 deepwater GOM completions run in 2007 and 2008.

We have been asked by a participant to ask whether any other Operators would like to share key data on artificial lift techniques. This would look at establishing some standard KPI’s, the sharing of data on the performance and efficiency of the various artificial lift methods as well as examining NPT with related reasons such as production losses etc. If you might be interested, or would like to know more, please email me.

In the last newsletter we showcased the new dynamic time-depth charting tool available on the website.

If you experience a problem with this chart please make sure you are using the latest version (3.03) of the Adobe SVG Viewer which is available, free of charge, here.

You will see in the article below hyperlinks to the minutes of our annual participants meetings. Don't forget you can also access all the minutes and presentations from previous years from the "useful downloads" tab on the main menu website page.

Best wishes for 2009 from all at the Rushmore Reviews.

Helen Rushmore

The Rushmore Reviews

The Rushmore Reviews provide the ‘industry standard’ for benchmarking of drilling and completions performance worldwide.

Over one hundred and sixty operating companies in seventy countries participate in the Reviews as a part of their performance improvement agenda. With a databank of key performance metrics on over twenty thousand wells extending over two decades, the Reviews offer an unrivalled insight into your competitors performance as well as providing planning data for well times and costs in areas where you do not yet operate.

The Reviews provide the key factual data that you need - no opinions or interpretations - to allow you to ‘benchmark with the best’.

  RDI and REDD tools finalised

Following sustained demand from a range of participating Operators for a global index that can be used to normalise well difficulty, or group wells based on similar difficulty ranges, the Rushmore Drilling Index (RDI) has now been finalised, with version 2.1 made available on 22 December.

The challenge, provided from a series of meetings with Operators, was to establish this index from worldwide well data and to include only objective factors derived from the data collected within the DPR, with no guesstimates or subjective data.

The RDI calculator on the website main menu page now enables you to obtain an RDI number for a new offshore or land well based on an input set of characteristics such as depth, angle, mud weight, casings etc. An RDI number will be provided for that well which describes its relative difficulty.

Most wells fall within a range from 5 to 100 with the most difficult wells extending up to around 250. The index is proportionate so that a well with an index of 70 is twice as difficult as a well with an index of 35.

Published data on the website also now shows the RDI value for most offshore and land wells, excluding some such as slot recovery and multi-lateral wells which are not currently covered by the model.

Along with the RDI, the website main menu page also contains a link to the Rushmore Estimated Drilling Days (REDD) tool. Using the same input data screen as the RDI calculator, the REDD provides a P50 estimate of the time that the ‘average’ Operator would take to drill that well on a ‘dry hole’ basis.

Testing the REDD, with 1,000 wells which were not used in development of the model, it predicted around 25% within 1 day of actual, around 50% within 3 days of actual and 80% within 10 days of actual. For more details of these tools please click here.

Please note that the RDI was up-graded to version 2.1 on 22 December. The result of this is that RDI values obtained from the calculator, and showing against published wells, have decreased by an average of around 10% compared to the version 2.0 values that have been displayed since November. We do not expect to make any further changes to RDI values. The REDD values have not changed and we are currently working on additionally providing P10 and P90 values.

Please do take a look at the RDI and REDD, we would greatly welcome your feedback.

  Recruitment

In October we attended our first Careers Fair at the University of Aberdeen. Having recently launched a Graduate Sales Training Course we were on the lookout for 2009 Recruits. Over 140 students registered their interest so hopefully our Sales Department will continue to grow.

Sean Holmes (pictured right with Senior Sales Associate Beryl Jackson at the Careers Fair) has just successfully passed his three month probationary period as a Sales Associate.

As the company continues to expand so our needs grow. We are currently headhunting for a Data Operations Manager plus additional staff for administration, IT and data processing functions.
  Annual Meetings

Please click here for the minutes of the annual DPR participants meeting which also contains details of changes to the terms and conditions of participation.

It was agreed to consider Venezuela as outside the scope of the Reviews until further notice. It was also agreed to allow sleeping participation in the CPR by virtue of DPR participation for Operators who have not yet run their first completion.

Please click here for the minutes of the CPR participants meeting and here for the minutes of the APR participants meeting.

Following these meetings we travelled to Castle Fraser to enjoy a guided tour of this ancient family home and a traditional Scottish dinner. This was followed by Scottish country dancing; from the ‘Gay Gordons’ to ‘Strip the Willow’ our guests impressed us both with their stamina and agility. As you can see from the photo's a great time was had by all!

Data Input Training Courses

There are two places available on the DPR, and one place available on the CPR, Data Input Training Courses being run in Aberdeen on the 27-29 January.Although an optional session is provided on website navigation and charting facilities this is not a course on how to analyse the data, but simply on how to best to enter it into the data input workbooks.

These courses will also be run on 28-30 April, 23-25 June and 29 Sept-1 Oct 2009. For more details please email or call Ms. Beryl Jackson on +44 (0)1224 251061.
