Rushmore Reviews: enabling Operators to 'Benchmark with the Best'
Over 30,000 offset wells drilled or completed by 180 Operators in 80 countries
  Letter from Helen

Hello,

I am really pleased to see that both the REDD (our drilling time estimation tool) and the RDI (index of relative drilling difficulty) are proving very popular additions to the website and are being regularly used by many participants.

Additionally, our video introduction to the website is being viewed frequently with very positive feedback from first time users. We are now working on another ‘how to’ video which will deal with the charting facilities.

Our data extraction service continues to expand. This allows participants to provide us with daily operations reports and end of well reports etc. from which we extract the relevant DPR and CPR data and enter it into the data input workbooks. We have recently provided this service ‘on-site’ for Bapetco in Egypt as well as at our offices for Cairn, Hess and Nexen.

SPEIn March we had a stand at the Amsterdam SPE conference (pictured right) and as a result of its success we aim to exhibit at future conferences, hopefully including the AOG conference to be held in Perth, Australia in March 2010. We are looking forward to meeting many of our participants in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region at that time as well, of course, as recruiting some new ones.

Although we do not have a presence this year at Offshore Europe in September, if you are going to be in town and would like to meet us, please do let me know and we can either get together at the conference venue or we can arrange for you to be transported to our offices.

We are delivering an introductory session at the SPE Forum in Cadiz on 20th September, the topic of which is “The battle to reduce drilling NPT”. If you will be there please stop by and say hello.

Due to our increasing workload we are currently recruiting for a Data Operations Manager, Commercial Associate and IT staff.

Our November Participant Meetings are fast approaching – please make a note in your diary of Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 November and be sure to book your room at The Marcliffe hotel.

Now is also the time to start posting your ideas for changes and improvements to the Reviews on the website forum. Alternatively, you can drop me an email with your thoughts and I will do the posting for you.

Some years ago our participants asked for time to be added to the annual meetings to allow them to share information on how they use the data to derive value. This year we have allocated one and a half days for this so, especially if your company has not previously done this, please could you consider sharing with others your experience and thoughts on this topic.

  Website improvements

Over the last months we have made a number of improvements to the website, most of these being suggestions made by participants, our thanks to Hess, Devon, BP and others. The ability to select wells from a map was requested by Seyi Adeleye of Shell at a previous annual participants meeting.
Map Selection
Demo video

Map selection tool

A significant new feature in the Drilling Review section of the website allows you, after performing a search, to select wells directly from the map using a resizable circle or rectangle tool.

We display all the wells where we have been provided with latitude and longitude data and therefore some ‘lite’ and ‘tight’ wells where this data has not been provided will not be displayed.

The flag colour indicates the rig type and, where we do not know the rig type, such as for some tight wells, a white flag is shown.

Website introduction video

For new website users we have provided a 12 minute video tutorial covering all the primary website features.

“I got all the information I needed. I watched the video prior to digging out the data so had no difficulties with navigation.”
Drilling Engineer, BP Azerbaijan

This video can also be viewed by non-participants – we anonymised the data shown – via a link in “The Databank” section of the public website.

Pre-2000 participants

Well selection ticks

List of Participants

The List of Participants feature has now been extended to include the years 1989 to 1999.

This will now allow you to view all of the Operators that have provided data since the Reviews began in 1989, with their well and completion numbers. Also, this will show you all the data we have for any country or any Group.

Although the pre-2000 wells and completions will be listed, their data will continue to be available in Excel download format only.

Selecting wells, using the tick boxes

You may already be aware that you can use tick boxes on the left hand side of the main data screen to select and remove wells from the search results.

Sometimes you may want to select a group of several wells and it is slow to tick each well individually.

You can now use the shift key to select a block of wells within any single page of wells. The shift key can also be used to de-select ticked wells.

Show Chart Data

Field Definitions

Download chart data

In response to a request from a participant we have added the ability to download the data which is charted, that is, the means, quartile values and other values which are plotted.

On each chart there is now a "Show chart data" button which allows the data to be copied to the clipboard and then printed.

Field and Data definitions

Definitions of all the fields can now be accessed by clicking the column headings in the search results or clicking the field names in a well's "full data" pop-up or clicking the headings when the data is downloaded to Excel.

The definitions of all the fields can be printed by going to the Data Definitions tab on the Main Menu where there are links to "Drilling web field definitions" and "Completions web field definitions".

Search Options

Default Fields

Additional search options

The Data Search Options screen now includes some extra data fields you can search on.

In the DPR you can now specify “full”, “lite” or “tight” data; you can search by RDI value and, for wells drilled by more than one rig type, you can specify how you want the search to work.

In the CPR, the options for intelligent wells and downhole monitoring have been improved.

Data fields options

The first time that the search results screen is displayed, a default set of fields is provided along with a selection of key performance indicators.

Originally, once different fields had been specified from the Data Fields screen it was not possible to just show the default set again. The Data Fields screen now has an option to "include default fields".
  Well Abandonment Performance Review

We are pleased to welcome Tullow into participation in the APR which will help them answer one or more of the following questions...
  • How do my abandonments compare to others in terms of cost and time?
  • Am I ‘over engineering’ my abandonment designs?
  • Are others using more effective techniques to abandon wells?
  • What technology are others using and what effect is this having on their cost and time performance?
  • What types of failures are other Operators experiencing?
  • What auditable data can I use to calculate future abandonment liabilities?
  • Who should I work with to share best practices?
  • What effects are regulatory differences between countries having on technology, cost and time?
  • What technology trials are appropriate?
  • What lessons have other Operators learned?
  • What data do I use to plan and budget for ‘special’ abandonments?
  • What range of savings are usually achieved in abandonment campaigns?

BP, Chevron, Hess, Lundin, Shell, Talisman, Total and Tullow are sharing data to help them to better budget, plan and then execute permanent well abandonments.

  Data Input Training

There are places available on the DPR and CPR data input training courses being run in Aberdeen on the 29 September to 1 October.

Although an optional session is provided on website navigation and charting facilities this is not a course on how to analyse the data, but simply on how to best to enter it into the data input workbooks.

For more details please email or call Ms. Gillian Thain on + 44 (0)1224 251062.
  Annual meetings

This year’s meetings are being held from Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 November at the Marcliffe at Pitfodels Hotel in Aberdeen. Attendance is free of charge for participants and prospective participants.

The first day and a half is for participants to share information on how they use the data to help improve planning, performance and for any other applications.

The afternoon of the second day will be devoted to examining proposals to change the terms and conditions of participation and data requirements of the Well Abandonment Review.

The third day is to accept or reject proposals (posted beforehand on the website forum) to make changes to the rules of participation of both the DPR and CPR as well as changes to the data collected for the Drilling Review.

The final day will consider proposals for changes to data in the Completions Review.

Drumtochty CastleHotel rooms are often difficult to obtain at short notice in Aberdeen so, as usual, we would suggest that you book your rooms at the Marcliffe as soon as possible quoting the “Rushmore Conference” in order to obtain a discounted rate. You can contact the hotel on + 44 (0) 1224 861000 or via their website.

A traditional Scottish evening Reception and Dinner will be held on the evening of Wednesday 11 at Drumtochty Castle (pictured).

If you would like to share how you have gained value or improved performance as a result of utilising the Reviews please do contact Helen.
