Rushmore Reviews: enabling Operators to 'Benchmark with the Best'

Over 20,000 offset wells drilled or completed by 150 Operators in 70 countries
Rushmore Reviews Online

Hello,

Winter has now well and truly arrived in Aberdeen but I’m pleased to say that the weather for our recent annual participant meetings was relatively warm and sunny, which nicely reflected the warm and friendly atmosphere of the meetings themselves.

We were delighted to welcome a record number of clients and guests from Asia, Africa, Russia, North and South America as well as Europe.

As usual, a number of prospective participants came along to learn more about how Operators gain value from the data and I would particularly like to thank the Petrobras group for making such a long journey to be with us. Peter and I will be travelling to Rio in January (I know, it’s a tough job!) to continue our discussions and also to visit other prospective participants in Buenos Aires.

In response to feedback from last year we scheduled more time at the meetings for the interactive workshop sessions, but still had a problem to fully discuss the output due to the volume of ideas enthusiastically generated each day.

Participant feedback on the session delivered by our keynote speaker and pre-eminent author on ‘best process benchmarking’, Dr. Robert Camp was highly complementary. “The power of the full benchmarking process was real eye-opener to me” commented one Drilling Manager.

I would like to thank all of our participant presenters for their contribution. Without their time, effort and willingness to share we would not have an event at all. So thank you; Maria-Carolina Cruz of Shell, Ian Hudson and Gordon Begg of Talisman, Thom Roller of Anadarko, Steve Trim and Tim Harrison of BG, Peter Fowler of Chevron, Karen Rekieta of Devon and Mike Pointing of Sakhalin Energy.

Our meeting was also enhanced by contributions from guest speakers who, while not representing participating Operators, brought real value to us from their expertise. I would like to thank David Curry of Hughes Christensen who made the journey from The Woodlands, Texas and Alistair Oag of Schlumberger. Finally much appreciation goes to Bob Camp who brought a wealth of experience and painted a picture for us of the journey from sharing data to finding and implementing best practices.

It is going to be tough to get a keynote speaker next year of similar stature but I’ve got a few ideas and have already started working on it. Talking about starting early, if you are thinking of coming to the 2006 ‘Best Practices in Benchmarking Drilling and Completions’ meeting why not book your room at the Marcliffe Hotel now? A number of participants left it a bit late this year and had to stay elsewhere as the hotel is very popular and fills up quickly.

The dates for the ‘Best Practices’ meeting are Tuesday and Wednesday 7th and 8th November 2006. The DPR participants meeting is on the 9th and the CPR and CER participants meeting is on the 10th November 2006.

On a different topic, Rainer Jackisch has just returned from Cairo where, aside from a visit to the pyramids, he has been helping Bapetco and Petrobel with on-site DPR and CPR data collection and verification.

If you would like Rainer to help you with data collection, training of your staff in data entry, data download automation or data analysis please let me know.

Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year from everyone at the Rushmore Reviews.

Helen Rushmore

Notes from the November Meetings

The notes of the ‘Best Practices in Benchmarking Drilling and Completions’ meeting may be obtained here. These contain hyperlinks to the PowerPoint slides used by the presenters.

I got value from hearing other operators describe how they use benchmarking as well as exchanging ideas and issues with others at the meeting. Well organized, good speakers, good facilitators, excellent facilities.
Chris Carstens,
Manager Engineering, Business Development and Non-Operated Joint Ventures, Chevron Houston.

The notes of the annual meeting of participants of the Drilling Performance Review may be obtained here.

Devon drilling personnel attend the Rushmore meeting to network with other participating operators. This experience affords us the opportunity to learn and obtain insight into what the ‘best in class’ operating companies do differently and provides us a format for sharing our ideas and success cases. The conference is always a positive experience.
Marty Rolleg,
International Drilling Manager, Devon Energy Houston.

The notes of the annual meeting of participants of the Completions Performance Review and Completions Efficiency Review may be obtained here.

Attending the 2005 Rushmore Reviews meeting strongly re-enforced for me the potency and criticality of benchmarking as a tool for step change performance improvement in well delivery.
Austin Omobhude,
Global Wells Benchmarking Coordinator, Shell Rijswijk.

Aberdeen Training Facility Opens

Our move to new offices has now allowed us to establish a training facility with the first course taking place on 13th December.

This course will cover understanding and inputting data into the Drilling Performance Review and navigating the participants’ website. There is a maximum of six people on the course and each is provided with a laptop PC for the practical exercises. The course will be a mixture of lecture style, interactive discussion and practical exercises for the Nexen, ConocoPhillips and Venture staff that have enrolled.

A similar course for the Completions Performance Review is under development. A module will also be available looking at how the data is used by Operators in applications from new business development through well design and planning to performance management and benchmarking.

These courses will take place, subject to demand, at regular intervals throughout the year. We shall be encouraging new participants to either send the staff who will be providing data to these courses, or engaging one of our staff to travel to their premises to deliver the same programme.

To enrol on a future course, or for more details about costs, please contact me.
