Hello,
I am particularly delighted in this issue to be able to bring you news of our new on-line dynamic charting facility which will enable you to gain yet more value from your participation in the Reviews. We have been providing ‘test previews’ of this to participants during our recent visits to Austria, the US and Norway and have been very pleased with the enthusiastic response that these have received.
Over the last few months, in order to publicise the developments on our website and services we have held a number of 'lunch and learn' sessions with management, operations and engineering staff in current and prospective participants with great success. Whilst in Houston we held sessions with Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Marathon and Shell and in Norway we held sessions with ConocoPhillips, Norsk Hydro and Statoil.
Later this year we will be visiting Houston, South America and other regions so if you would like a presentation on how to get maximum value from the Reviews at your location please do let me know and we will do our very best to oblige.
Whilst in Houston in March we met with participants to decide on the way forward with the ‘Rushmore Drilling Difficulty Index’. It was agreed that this should be constructed using only factors where we have empirical data collected in the DPR. This is now underway and the Index will be published in advance of the annual November meetings. The ‘Rushmore Drilling Time Prediction Tool’, which was developed as a result of the work on this topic, will also be provided on the website prior to these meetings.
Our resident ‘data detective’ Rainer Jackisch remains in demand amongst participants for assistance in the collection of data, and has been recently working with OMV in Austria, PDO in Oman (pictured right) and Total in France. If you would like assistance or support with data entry, data download automation, training of your staff or data analysis, please do me know.
"We have been very pleased with the assistance that Rainer has provided with our data submission process"
Patrick Bouroumeau-Fuseau, Total, Pau.
We were honoured earlier this year to sponsor the SETPOINT Scotland Royal Institution Mathematics Master class 2005-2006. The series of specialist workshops were open to budding young mathematicians in Aberdeen and were a great success. SETPOINT run initiatives concerned with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and it was great to be involved with the mathematicians of the future. Our Data Management Director, Mrs. Pat Stapenhurst, was invited to give a speech and hand out certificates to the participants.
During June we were very pleased to be invited to Norsk Hydro in Bergen to meet with both Hydro and Statoil staff to explore possible improvements to the Completions Performance Review. Along with Pat Stapenhurst and our external completions expert, Cameron Laing we worked on the proposals and agreed that these will be posted upon the website forum and presented by Norsk Hydro at the November participant meetings.
As the studies continue to grow, so does our team and we welcome Andrew Williamson and Cameron Terry to our IT group, and also Elizabeth Platt to the data analysis team. It is great to have them join us.
Finally I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at our annual meetings in November. If you could possibly present a paper to show how your company utilises the Reviews to bring about performance improvement please could you let me know.
Thank you.
Helen.
No longer will you have to wait until well after the end of the year before seeing your data charted alongside other operators, nor will you view only one year’s worth of data on any chart. Our IT Manager, Ray McKaig has now developed a suite of ‘real time’ on-line charts that replace the old static charts we used to make every year.
Now you can choose the well types, the country, the years and many other well attributes and see the data presented instantly in a number of different chart formats – see examples, using dummy data, here.
This is one of the most significant improvements to the Reviews since their inception over 15 years ago.
In order to use this facility it is necessary for you to download a free browser plug-in called Adobe SVG viewer - http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html. This is a sister program to Adobe Acrobat and should be acceptable to your IT department.
To view the charts you first select the wells you wish to chart using the ‘search’ page and then click ‘charts and metrics’ and follow the instructions.
We are now working on an improved ‘search’ function and the next version of the website will allow more flexible choices of the wells returned as well as the ability to include and exclude individual wells from the charts.
If you have any comments or would like any help please email Ray.
How could the Reviews be better?
A number of Operators have already posted ideas for change and improvement on the website forum. These proposals will make up most of the agenda for the final two days of our November meetings where participants will decide which will be implemented.
Currently posted are proposals to:
We are in the early stages of planning for the 2006 'Best Practices in Benchmarking Drilling and Completions' meeting. The dates for this are Tuesday and Wednesday 7th and 8th November 2006. The DPR participants meeting is on the 9th and the CPR and CER participants meeting is on the 10th November 2006.
The venue will be the ever popular Marcliffe at Pitfodels Hotel in Aberdeen www.marcliffe.com. Rooms are booked up very quickly, so if you wish to stay in the hotel please make your reservations as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
This year, our Scottish evening reception on Wednesday 8th November will be held at Haddo House (pictured), the ancestral home of Lady Aberdeen. Designed in 1732 by William Adam, Haddo is one of Scotland’s grandest stately homes and will provide a stunning setting for a very enjoyable evening.
As always we will have a traditional Scottish Piper to pipe us into dinner. This is always a great opportunity to network with your fellow participants and sample some Scottish cuisine (haggis is optional!).
There is no charge for participants to attend these meetings but numbers are limited so please do let us know as soon as possible if you would like to come along.
The success of the Best Practice Meetings is always built upon participants’ willingness to share their benchmarking success stories and experiences. Over the last few years we have had some very inspiring and interesting presentations from operators worldwide.
We are currently looking for participants who are willing to share their benchmarking experiences either as formal presentations of around 20 minutes duration as well as shorter ‘show and tell’ sessions. If you would be interested in contributing to the next meeting please do let me know.
Repsol Trinidad is participating for the first time and have committed to both DPR and CPR to 2010.
Oil Search, who last participated in 2000, has committed to the DPR and CPR on a global basis from 2005 to 2009 as well as retrospective participation in the DPR back to 2001. Data will be provided this year from Egypt, Papua New Guinea and Yemen.
Hess are to participate on a global basis in both the DPR and CPR this year providing data from Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, deepwater GOM, Indonesia and Thailand.
The following have renewed their participation; Centrica UK DPR, Husky Canada DPR and CPR, ConocoPhillips Norway and UK CPR, Talisman Norway and UK DPR and CPR to 2008, Devon on a near-global basis for DPR until 2010, E.ON UK (was Caledonia) DPR to 2008 plus CPR participation for the first time with retrospective 2005 data.
Burlington Algeria has renewed for both the DPR and CPR this year and the remaining Burlington operations will come under the ConocoPhillips contract in future.
Total have renewed their global DPR commitment until 2008. This will provide data this year from: Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Cameroon, Congo, France, Gabon, deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Qatar, Russia, Syria, UAE, UK and Yemen.
We were pleased that our inaugural data input training course with attendees from Venture, ConocoPhillips and Nexen received good evaluations. It covers understanding and inputting data into the Reviews and navigating the website. The course, which is a mixture of lecture style, interactive discussion and practical sessions, can accommodate a maximum of six people and each is provided with a laptop PC for the practical exercises.
A second course, to be held in July specifically for Shell, will be attended by technical staff from Brunei, Nigeria, Europe and the US. The next 'open' event will be scheduled later in the year to meet demand. If you would be interested in attending please do let me know.
These companies now provide the ability to auto-populate the DPR data input workbook quickly and easily from their standard software products.
Total and Conoco Phillips are currently using this facility in Peloton’s WellView 8, with BG and Eni also planning to utilise this feature once they are fully implemented.
Landmark’s Engineer’s Desktop 2003.16 release, OpenWells® Performance Reviews has been extended to support 100% of the 2006 DPR parameters directly from the Engineer’s Data Model® platform without requiring additional add-ins or other utilities. An upcoming release of OpenWells will provide support for the Completions Performance Review.
The IDS DataNet Rushmore interface draws data from multiple wells and delivers that data in compatible format to a Rushmore Input Screen. Any additional data required is entered using ‘free-text’ dropdown lists which are also converted by DataNet into compatible code and imported into Rushmore.
“IDS have provided us with a purpose-built DPR data interface. At the click of a mouse, IDS will identify relevant data from elsewhere in the database and concatenate it into a single page format, thus negating the need to laboriously duplicate data by hand.
This automated data entry in IDS comprises 90% of our required DPR report content, with the remainder entered into free-text fields. The data is then simply downloaded as a text file and then copied and pasted into the DPR spreadsheet for upload”.
